Azerbaijan's Press Council will make an appeal for the pardon of a journalist.

"Having studied the conditions of detention and treatment of journalist Mushfig Huseynov in prison, the Press Council will make an appeal to the President of Azerbaijan for pardon," the Press Council told Trend on Dec. 8.

"According to the chairman of the Council Aflatun Amashov, particular attention is paid to the conditions of detention and treatment of Huseynov. Of course, tuberculosis is a serious disease, but it is treatable. This will require a lot of time. Now the process of treatment is continuing. According to his own words and according to doctors, there is some progress in his health. He is not in critical situation," he said.

Huseynov was detained on 24 July 2007 and presented to the investigation by the employees of the Ministry of National Security of Azerbaijan. He was accused under article 311.1 (bribery) of the Criminal Code. On 21 January 2008, the Court on Heinous Crimes sentenced Huseynov to six years imprisonment. Also, he was deprived of the right to conduct journalistic activities within two years. Later, the Appeal Court of Baku reduced his sentence to five years.

There is sufficient reason to appeal to the President of Azerbaijan for pardoning Huseynov, said Amashov. "We know that he is seriously ill. Huseynov has served half of his sentence. He has two young children. The journalist himself also appealed to the President of the country for the pardon some time ago," he said.
