An Azerbaijani court opened a trial against ex-Mingachevir Chief Executive Suleyman Rashidov, who is accused of stealing state property.

Today, the Baku Heinous Crimes Court held a preparatory meeting on the criminal case against Rashidov. A court hearing is scheduled for Jan. 19.

Until 1997, Rashidov headed the Mingachevir City Education Department. The same year, he was appointed head of the Mingachevir City Executive Power. After his release from office in 1998, he was declared wanted.

Rashidov is accused of embezzling state assets. He was arrested in September 2009. While working as head of the Mingachevir City Education Department, Rashidov was said to have misappropriated state funds allocated to educational institutions in the city.

Rashidov is charged with Article 308.2 (Abusing Official Authority) of the Azerbaijani Criminal Code.
