Azerbaijan studies the proposal to test new buildings for radioactivity, director of the Radiation Problems Institute of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS), Adil Garibov, told Trend.

"It needs to have the authority to prepare certificates on radiation in new buildings, as well as the authority on research in these buildings was delegated to either the Ministry of Emergency Situations, or the State Committee on Standardization, Metrology and Patents. There must be a special structure, preparing the information on radiation security of areas designated for construction of buildings," said Garibov.

According to him, the Radiation Problems Institute has prepared and submitted to relevant government agencies a number of recommendations on this issue. "Unfortunately, this issue has not found its complete solution. We hope that the issue will be resolved in the near future," said Garibov.

According to him, work is under way to test the radioactivity of building materials imported into Azerbaijan.

"Upon the decision by the Cabinet of Ministers, now the Institute has been approved as structure engaged in monitoring controls on the border. There is every equipment necessary for monitoring on border checkpoints. Our institute has a special team which is constantly on the border and controls the level of radioactivity of imported materials. All the building materials being transported across the border are tested for radioactivity," said Garibov.

According to him, the certificate of any product should contain information about its radioactivity. "Especially this requirement must be referred to the ceramic products. All the ceramic materials that are imported to Azerbaijan must have certificates on radioactivity," said Garibov.
