Twenty-nine tons of opium were seized at the Imam Khomeini Tehran International Airport, the Jamejamonline.i r wbsite reported.
The narcotic substances were bought from China in the Indian city of Mumbai, from they were delivered to Tehran on a special plane upon the order of an Iranian private pharmaceutical company.
Payment for goods was made through an Iranian bank.
The criminal case is under investigation.
According to unofficial information, the opium was brought into the country under the order of the Health Ministry. The drugs were intended for the manufacturing of pharmaceuticals.
This is the first time such a large consignment of drugs has been arrested in Iran.
