Total payment card turnover in Azerbaijan ups by 15 percent in May

As of June 1, 4.385 million payment cards were in use in Azerbaijan. It exceeds the similar index in May by 0.7 percent, and 6.4 percent compared to the same period of 2010, the Central Bank of Azerbaijan said.

Total turnover on payment cards through ATMs and POS-terminals as of June 1 amounted to 582 million manat (a 15-percent increase in May), while total number of operations - 4.389 million (a 20.1-percent increase).

The number of operations with debit cards hit 4.163 in this period (an increase at 20.3 percent in May). Total amount of operations with debit cards hit 524 million manat (16.4 percent).

Some 3.922 operations were held with debit cards through the ATM worth 493 million manat and 139,000 operations through the POS- terminals in the amount of 17 million manat.

The number of operations by credit cards hit 226,000 (16.5 percent) worth 59 million manat (7.3 percent). A total of 87,000 operations worth 22 million manat were carried out by credit cards through the ATM and 29,000 operations in the amount of 14 million manat through Pos-terminals.

As of June 1, 1,960 ATMs were in use in the country, increasing by 208 units during the year. Some 1,086 ATMs are located in Baku, while 874 - in other cities and regions.

During the reporting period, the number of POS-terminals totaled 10,095 units, 9,216 of which are located in Baku, while 879 units in other cities and regions.

The official exchange rate on July 21 is 0.7864 manat to $1.
