Azerbaijani transport sector slightly increases freight transportation

The Azerbaijani transport sector transported 67.6 million tonnes of cargo in January-April 2014, which is 1.9 percent more than in the same period of 2013, according to the Azerbaijani State Statistics Committee's report as of January-April 2014.

The volume of non-oil goods increased by 3.5 percent and hit 46.2 million tonnes in January-April, according to the report.

Some 73.8 percent of the goods from the total volume of goods, transported during this period, fell to the private sector. Some 54.2 percent of goods were transported by vehicles, 31.3 percent by pipelines, 9.7 percent by railway and 4.8 percent by ships.

Some 218 million tonnes of cargo were transported by the Azerbaijani transport sector in 2013, which is 3.4 percent more than in 2012.

Around 564.4 million people were transported by passenger vehicles in January-April, which is 6 percent more than in the same period of 2013. Most passengers were transported by vehicles (87.1 percent) and metro (12.7 percent).

Some 6.6 million tonnes of cargo were transported by railway in January - April compared to 7.4 million tonnes in the same period of 2013.

Some 3.3 million tonnes of cargo were transported by ships in January-April compared to 4.2 million tonnes in the same period of 2013. The entire volume of transported cargo fell to international operations. The volume of cargo handled at Azerbaijani ports in January-April amounted to 4.2 million tonnes.

Some 36.6 million tonnes of cargo were transported by vehicles, which is 3.2 percent more than in January-April 2013. The volume of passenger transportation hit 491.5 million people (a 6.3 percent growth). Some 96.3 percent of passengers were transported by buses and 3.7 percent - by cars.

Some 71.7 million people were transported by the subway, increasing by 4.4 percent compared to January-April 2013.

Some 478,000 passengers were transported by aircraft, which is 2.7 percent more than in the same period of 2013. Around 0.2 percent of transportation by this type of transport fell to the private sector.
