Wheat harvest starting in Iran

BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 5

The wheat harvest began yesterday (April 4), at the Deir county of Bushehr province in southern Iran, said Adviser to Iran’s Agriculture Minister Esmaeil Esfandiaripour, Trend reports citing the ministry.

According to Esfandiaripour, at the same time, wheat harvest has begun in the southeastern Iranian province of Sistan and Baluchestan.

Esfandiaripour added that the next stage, wheat harvesting will begin in the provinces of Fars, Khuzestan and Kerman and the wheat harvesting should begin in the hot regions of the country by April 19.

The official said that the wheat harvesting will begin in late May in the cold regions of Iran and in general, the wheat harvest in Iran lasts 4.5 months.

"There are more than 6 million hectares of land in Iran for wheat cultivation. Its 4 million hectares are used for dryland farming and about 2 million hectares for water farming," he said.

The official forecasted that more than 14 million tons of wheat will be harvested this year.

Esfandiaripour said that 18,000 combine harvesters are ready for wheat harvesting. About 12,500 of them are taken to other provinces after the harvest.

"Wheat is one of the main food products in Iran. The economic value of this product in Iran is 350 trillion rials (about $8.33 billion). If we add barley and rapeseed to this economic value, it will increase by a total of 450-500 trillion rials (about $10.7-11.9 billion).

The price of ordinary wheat to be purchased from farmers in the current planting year is set between 25,000 rials (about 59 cents) and 26,000 rials (about 61 cents) per kilogram of durum wheat in Iran in the current Iranian year. A number of products, including wheat, tea, rice and other products, are purchased from farmers by the state company under a guarantee in Iran.
