Azerbaijan and Iran are two important and strategic countries in the North-South Corridor, the Iranian Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Seyyed Abbas Mousavi told Trend.
The ambassador emphasized that both the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Republic of Azerbaijan are located geographically strategic position. One of the advantages of the two countries is the transit field.
"Iran intends to diversify import, export and transit routes between the two countries. Thus, the transit should be carried out from south to north and vice versa: Given the conditions that will arise in the near future, there is a need for new corridors for the cargo transportation, especially, from India to Russia and Europe and vice versa," he added.
Mousavi noted that due to the land and sea borders are available between the two countries, it is possible to diversify transit opportunities. Both countries can benefit their railway, road and sea potentials to the maximum.
The ambassador said that at present, the trade turnover between the two countries is at an acceptable level. Even the volume of transit between the two countries increased by about 27 percent over last year, compared to the previous year.
According to the statistics of the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA), Iran’s trade tunover with Azerbaijan amounted to 1.02 million tons worth $587 million over the last Iranian year (from March 20, 2020 through March 20, 2021).
While in the first two months of the current Iranian year (from March 21 through May 21, 2021), the trade turnover amounted to about 137,000 tons worth $58.8 million.
