Iran’s Hormozgan Province boosts shrimp catching

BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 27. The shrimp catch in Hormozgan Province, which is located in the south of Iran, rose by 46 percent in the last 41 days (September 30 through November 9, 2023), compared to the same period last year, said Masoud Barani, director general of Fisheries Department of Hormozgan Province, Trend reports.

Barani stated that a total of 830 tons of shrimp were caught in Hormozgan Province within the specified period.

The director general added that shrimp catching in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman continued for 41 days in the current season, taking into account weather conditions and other factors.

According to him, 70 percent or 580 tons of the caught shrimp were large-sized shrimp, and 30 percent or 250 tons were small-sized shrimp.

Barani also said that during the mentioned period, 2,500 people and 140 boats were engaged in shrimp catching.

The official stressed that about 320,000 tons of fisheries products are caught in Hormozgan Province annually. A quarter of Iran's fisheries production belongs to this province.

On average, Iran produces 60,000 tons of shrimp per year, of which about 60 percent is exported and 40 percent is consumed domestically. The main provinces for shrimp farming and fishing are Khuzestan, Sistan and Baluchestan, Hormozgan, Bushehr, and Golestan.
