Azerbaijan, Baku, Oct. 25 /Trend E. Ismailov/

The order and timing of the transition to Euro-4 and Euro-5 environmental standards in Azerbaijan will be determined by the government, the Azerbaijani State Committee for Standardisation, Metrology and Patent told Trend.

These standards regulate the content of harmful substances in the exhaust gases of motor vehicles with engines running on diesel and petrol, as well as the quality of fuel used in the country.

"The standards have been prepared by the State Committee and submitted to the country's Cabinet of Ministers. Accordingly, the order and timing of their implementation will be determined by the government," the committee said.

Aside from that, the State Committee underlined that the country is planning to adopt environmental standard Euro-3 from 2014. This issue must also be approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.

Previously the head of the Committee's Standardisation and Technical Regulation Department Namig Tagiyev said that the use of Euro-4 and Euro-5 standards in the country will be implemented in stages over the next few years.

The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) is also preparing for the use of Euro-3 standard. Production of gasoline of this standard by SOCAR is planned for 2014 when the reconstruction of existing refineries is complete.

Further improvement of the quality of Euro-4 and Euro-5 fuel will be possible after the SOCAR commissioning of a new oil and gas processing petrochemical complex planned to be constructed in Baku city's Garadagh district.

A new standard called AZS 636-2012 'Motor vehicles. Ecological Classes' came in to force in Azerbaijan on August 1, 2012. This standard implies the introduction of the Euro-3 standard for emissions of harmful substances by automobiles.
