By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

Tbilisi City Hall will announce a tender for the design and construction of a gas collector at the Lilo landfill in the coming days, said Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze at a meeting of the city government, Trend reports referring to Georgian media outlets.

According to the project, the gas that is released as a result of the decomposition of waste will be collected in one place.

“It will be an approximately a two-year project" said Kaladze. In his words, about 50-60 million lari ($16.8-$20.2 million) will be spent on it.

The mayor announced the work on a project to transform the landfill in the village of Lilo into a source of gas production in July 2019. The implementation of the project will ensure the normal operations at the landfill, which, in turn, will contribute to improving the environment in the city.

Currently, the Lilo landfill is only the one landfill in Tbilisi, to which all waste is transported. Although this dump is partially closed, it causes great discomfort to the residents of Samgori district and the village of Lilo.

The issue of landfills is one of the key issues reflected in the draft General Plan for Land Use of Tbilisi, which is aimed at improving the environmental situation in the capital.
