By Nargiz Sadikhova – Trend:

Kazakhstan’s major oil fields will undergo planned maintenance work in 2020, Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Energy told Trend.

According to the ministry, in 2019, some 17 million tons of oil were processed at Kazakh refineries. Thus, 5.2 million tons account for Pavlodar refinery, 5.4 million tons for PetroKazakhstan Oil Products LLP, 5.4 million tons for Atyrau refinery, 885,900 tons for CASPI BITUM, and 151,000 tons for Condensate group of companies.

Last year was also marked by implementation of overhaul at the Kazakhstan’s largest oil fields: Kashagan, Karachaganak, Tengiz.

“Planned maintenance work is also planned at the major fields in 2020, which will not require suspension of field’s activities and changes in planned operational indicators,” the ministry said.

The Kashagan field is one of three largest oil fields located in the northern part of the Kazakh sector of the Caspian Sea. Its recoverable reserves reach approximately 9-13 billion barrels (1-2 billion tons) of oil.

The first commercial oil production started at Kashagan in 2016. The project operator North Caspian Operating Company (NCOC) shipped the first million tons of oil for export in early 2017. NCOC has reached a record- breaking volume of oil extraction at the field (390,000-400,000 barrels a day) in 2019.

Karachaganak is one of the largest oil and gas condensate fields in Kazakhstan. Karachaganak Petroleum Operating produces oil and gas from the Karachaganak field. The shares in the consortium are as follows: Eni - 29.25 percent, Royal Dutch Shell - 29.25 percent, Chevron - 18 percent, Lukoil - 13.5 percent and KazMunayGas - 10 percent.

Kazakhstan’s Tengiz oil field ranks as the world’s deepest producing giant oil field and the largest single-trap producing reservoir in existence. Nearby is another world-class reservoir called the Korolev Field. Chevron company holds a 50-percent interest in Tengizchevroil, which operates the two fields.
