Despite the general economic crisis which also affected the energy sector of Georgia, 2020 is a remarkable year in terms of the country’s ability to continue on its reform path, Director of the Energy Community Secretariat, Mr. Janez Kopač told Trend.
"Georgian electricity market concept design and electricity market rules were adopted, which set concrete timelines and mechanisms to activate the competitive electricity market from 2021," he said.
According to Kopač, the Georgian Energy Exchange and Georgian State Electrosystem have been granted licenses for operating relevant market segments.
"Furthermore, intensive work is ongoing on other secondary legal acts including the gas market concept design. It is to be adopted in October 2020 and followed by the development and adoption of respective market rules at the beginning of 2021," the director added.
As he noted, also, a number of developments are in progress in the areas of energy efficiency and renewables, and this process is expected to intensify in the coming years.
