Development of well-functioning gas hub would diversify Georgia’s gas market - Energy Community

BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 14

By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

The development of a well-functioning gas hub would diversify Georgia’s gas market, Director of Energy Community Secretariat, Janez Kopac told Trend.

According to him, this is improving the security of supply, providing accurate and reliable price signals, and thus contributing to Georgia’s economic development.

As Kopac noted, at present Georgia’s gas market is illiquid and foreclosed.

"Becoming a regional gas hub requires a solid legal, regulatory and financial framework, including the establishment of gas exchange, unbundling of Georgian Oil and Gas Corporation (GOGC), enactment of market rules and concepts that promote real competition, etc," he added.

Director said, that increasing liquidity is the biggest challenge at present as it would require more imports from Russia, starting to import gas from Turkey and selling so-called social gas, earned as a transit income from SOCAR on the market.
