TANAP to contribute to Georgia’s gas supply security and diversity - Energy Community

BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 16

By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

The TANAP (Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline) Project, bringing new gas sources from the Caspian Region, will contribute to Georgia’s gas supply security and diversity, Director of Energy Community Secretariat, Janez Kopac told Trend.

As he noted, Georgia is benefiting from the gas transiting the country but cannot influence the quantities.

"Georgia seems fully committed to continuing on its energy reform path under the Energy Community Treaty. The key now is to speed up the unbundling process and ensure that gas reforms will be implemented with the same high level of commitment by the Georgian authorities as was the case for electricity. The Energy Community Secretariat will continue to support Georgia in this effort," Kopac said.

According to him, regional energy cooperation based on a common legal framework for the energy markets underpinned by the principles of solidarity, competitiveness and sustainability is at the heart of the Energy Community Treaty.

"Even though Georgia’s direct neighbours are not signatories to the Energy Community Treaty at present, the Treaty provides Georgia with a legal toolkit to govern the energy relations with its neighbours. Subject to the willingness of its neighbours, it will be possible to multiply the benefits and gains that the Treaty provides," Kopac said.
