COVID-19 pandemic impacts implementation of energy reforms in Georgia

The coronavirus pandemic has certainly had an impact on the implementation of energy reforms in Georgia, Director of the Energy Community Secretariat Janez Kopac told Trend.

"Despite the proliferation of online meetings, the lack of physical communication has nevertheless affected certain activities of the Secretariat in Georgia and locally in Georgia," he added.

For example, the date of fulfilment of the obligations regarding the unbundling and independence of the system operators in the electricity sector was postponed by 6 months and one of the main reasons referred to was COVID-19, Kopac said.

Moreover, the launch of the electricity exchange was also delayed, he noted.

"Instead of 1 July 2021, it will be activated on 1 January 2022 and one of the reasons was also related to the pandemic without which the trainings would have reportedly been more efficient," Kopac added.
