BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 1. Iran is expected to start exporting electricity to Türkiye within the next 5 months, the CEO of Iran's Power Generation, Distribution, and Transmission Company (TAVANIR) Arash Kordi told ISNA, Trend reports.

“At present, tests are being carried out at the 'back-to-back' substation in Van, Türkiye, and 60-70 percent of the operations have already been completed. After the launch of this substation, the electricity export from Iran to Türkiye can be started,” he said.

Back-to-back connection for electric power transmission is a high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) system with both ends in the same switchyard. This is used to couple asynchronously operated power grids or for connecting power grids of different frequencies where no DC transmission line is necessary.

The CEO did not disclose the volume of electricity to be exported.

Kordi noted that according to international contracts, Iran currently exports about 700-800 megawatt-hours of electricity per day to Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq.

The official also pointed out that electricity exchange is of great importance for Iran. That’s why the country intends to use its existing potentials to the maximum extent.
