BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 12. The global polypropylene industry capacity additions is expected to be driven by China and India by 2027, Trend reports with reference to GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

As such, around 72 percent of the propylene capacity additions will account for Asia, which will have the addition of capacities from new-build and expansion projects in the amount of 43.33 million tons per annum between 2023 and 2027.

The polypropylene industry growth in Asia will be accelerated primarily by the increased demand for polypropylene in packaging and automotive industry.

“For the upcoming new build projects, the region is expected to add a capacity of 42.95mtpa from 84 planned and announced projects, whereas, for the expansion of the existing polypropylene projects, the region is expected to add a capacity of 0.38mtpa from four planned projects,” said Nivedita Roy, Oil and Gas Analyst at GlobalData.

She noted that North Huajin Refining and Petrochemical Liaoning Polypropylene Plant will account for the main capacity addition in China. The plant with a capacity of 1mtpa is set to start polypropylene production in 2027.

As for India, Reliance Industries Jamnagar Polypropylene Plant 3 will be the main driver of the capacity addition. The plant, which is expected to be commissioned by 2026, will have a capacity of 5.20mtpa.
