Payment card turnover up in Azerbaijan

The turnover on payment cards through ATMs and POS terminals in Azerbaijan amounted to 1.9 billion manat ($1.1 billion) in September 2019, which is 35.4 percent more than in the same period of 2018, Trend reports referring to the Azerbaijani Central Bank (CBA).

According to the CBA report, the total number of transactions with payment cards amounted to 14.1 million transactions (an increase of 48.1 percent) for the reporting period. Some 1.5 million transactions worth 138 million manat ($80.8 million) were carried out outside the country.

The number of transactions with debit cards (both domestically and abroad) amounted to 12.3 million transactions worth 1.7 billion manat ($995.7 million), of which 6.2 million transactions worth 1.2 billion manat ($702.8 million) were carried out using ATMs in Azerbaijan, and 1.5 million operations worth 142 million manat ($83.1 million) via POS terminals.

In September 2019, bank customers carried out 1.7 million transactions worth 136 million manat ($79.6 million) via credit cards (both domestically and abroad). Moreover, 261,000 operations worth 42 million manat ($24.6 million) were carried out using ATMs within the country, and 721,000 operations worth 39 million manat ($22.8 million) were carried out using POS terminals in the country.

Number of payment cards, ATMs and POS terminals

By the end of September 2019, the number of payment cards increased by 14.3 percent (compared to the same period of last year) to 7.5 million cards.

Most of the cards (i.e. 6.5 million cards) consist of debit cards. The number of credit cards in September amounted to 763,000.

As of Oct. 1, 2019, 2,592 ATMs were operating in the country, 1,385 of them in Baku and 1,207 in other Azerbaijani cities and districts.

The number of ATMs has increased by 90 units or 3.6 percent since early 2019.

The number of POS terminals in the country amounted to 64,777, of which 38,265 were installed in Baku and 25,714 in other Azerbaijani cities and districts.

The number of POS terminals has decreased by 1,333 or 2 percent since early 2019.

The volume of transactions in ATMs and POS terminals

In September 2019, 3.9 ATMs and 0.15 POS-terminals accounted for 1,000 people in Azerbaijan.

An average of 2,249 operations worth 515,929 manat ($302,387) were carried out per one ATM in September. The volume of one operation per one ATM amounted to 207.1 manat ($121.3).

There was an average of 34.6 operations worth 2,796 manat ($1,638) per one POS terminal in September. The volume of one operation in the POS terminal amounted to 80.8 manat ($47.3).
