Iran unveils volume of sugar to be produced in country

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Sept. 6

By Elnur Baghishov – Trend:

Iran is expected to produce about 950,000 tons of sugar in the current Iranian year (from March 21, 2021 through March 20, 2022), Manager for ‘Sugar Beet Project’ of the Ministry of Agriculture Jihad, Peyman Hesadi said, Trend reports citing the ministry.

Hesadi said that about 7 million tons of sugar beet are planned to be harvested in Iran this planting year. So, 5.5 million tons of sugar beet were harvested in the spring, and 1.5 million tons are to be harvested in autumn.

“Currently, sugar beet is being harvested on more than 100,000 hectares of arable land in some western regions of the country,” he added.

The manager noted that the price for the guaranteed purchase of sugar beets for the next planting year may be announced soon. It is proposed to set 1 kg of sugar beet for 75,000 rials (about $1.78) for the next planting year.

However, given that the guaranteed purchase price of sugar beet increases by about 25 percent per year, this figure will be at least 18,700 rials (about $0.44), according to him.

Reportedly, 1 kg of sugar beet in Iran is purchased from farmers under a guarantee for about 12,500 rials (about $0.29) in the current planting year.

A number of products, including wheat, tea, rice, and other products are purchased from farmers by GTC under a guarantee in Iran.
