BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 31. Azerbaijan, despite contributing just 0.13 percent to emissions, is pursuing policy to achieve fairly ambitious climate goals, Head of the Secretariat of the National Coordination Council for Sustainable Development, Head of Department of the Ministry of Economy Huseyn Huseynov said at the 5th dialogue on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on the theme “Future Echoes: Bridging Pathways for Climate Change and Global Goals” in Baku today, Trend reports.

He noted that among the agenda items for Azerbaijan's development, alongside socio-economic issues and others, a special focus is placed on political activities aimed at addressing environmental concerns.

"If we look at the strategic documents adopted by the President, the aim of 'National Priorities for Socio-Economic Development: Azerbaijan 2030', especially its fifth point at transforming Azerbaijan into a green growth country, as well as the contributions of specific sections of the 'Strategy for Socio-Economic Development of Azerbaijan for 2022-2026' toward achieving environmental goals further demonstrate that political activities for solving environmental issues hold a special place in our development agenda, alongside socio-economic matters," he emphasized.

Recalling that only a few days remain until COP29, the official representative of the Ministry stated that today’s dialogue discussed 14 initiatives put forward by the COP29 presidency.

"The discussions included increasing the accessibility of climate financing, boosting investments in human capital, particularly in the climate context, and implementing the initiative to integrate trade, investments, and climate. There was also an exchange of views on encouraging member states to actively participate in this initiative.

The Ministry of Economy has implemented the fifth dialogue on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with the office of the UN Resident Coordinator. The first SDG dialogue initiative took place in 2022. During this dialogue initiative, we discussed 'green transformation' and avenues for additional economic growth using 'green tools'.

Due to the interest shown by governmental institutions and UN agencies in this platform, it has already become a productive discussion forum for addressing issues arising within the framework of the SDGs at subsequent stages. Today, the fifth SDG dialogue coincided with UN Day. We discussed the adopted rules for reducing global emissions," Huseynov added.
