Kazakhstan sees decrease in passenger transportation via railways amid COVID-19

Kazakhstan’s revenue from the transportation of cargo, luggage, and cargo luggage via railway transportation amounted to 155.6 billion tenge ($369.4 million) over two months of 2021, which is 4.8 percent more than during the same period of 2020, Trend reports with reference to Kazakhstan’s Statistics Committee.

Revenues from the transportation of cargo, luggage, and cargo luggage via railway in Feb. 2021 amounted to 73.7 billion tenge ($175.1 million), which is an 8.8-percent increase in comparison to the same month of 2020.

The volume of cargo, luggage, and cargo luggage transported via railway during the reporting period amounted to 64.2 million tons, climbing 2.7 percent compared to the same period of last year (30.5 million tons in Feb. 2021, down by 1.2 percent year-on-year).

Cargo turnover amounted to 44.03 billion ton-kilometers decreasing by 1.6 percent in comparison to last year (20.8 billion in Feb. 2021, a decrease of 6.1 percent).

In turn, Kazakhstan’s revenue from passenger transportation amounted to 6.7 billion tenge ($16.08 million) over two months of 2021, which is a 57.1 percent slump in comparison to last year. February’s revenue from passenger transportation was 3.2 billion tenge ($7.6 million), which is 55.2 percent less than in Feb. 2020.

The number of transported passengers amounted to 1.9 million people, which is a 44.4 percent decline compared to the same period of last year (910,450 passengers in Feb. 2021, down by 44.5 percent).

The passenger turnover amounted to 1.4 billion passenger-kilometers (pkm) which compared to the same period of last year is a decrease of 43.6 percent. February’s passenger turnover was 716.1 million pkm (39.8 percent decrease year-on-year).
