Global demand for air transport grows in March 2021

BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 5

The global demand for cargo and passenger shipments by planes grew by 7.7 percent in March 2021 compared to the previous month, Trend reports referring to the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

According to the association, in the reporting month this demand decreased by 67.2 percent over the year.

"Asia-Pacific region continued to suffer from the steepest traffic declines for a ninth consecutive month. The Asia-Pacific airlines’ March international traffic was down 94.8 percent compared to March 2019,” said the IATA. “European carriers recorded an 88.3 percent decline in traffic in March versus March 2019. Middle Eastern airlines’ demand fell 81.6 percent in March compared to March 2019, Latin American airlines experienced an 82.4 percent demand drop, and North American carriers saw March traffic sink 80.6 percent. African airlines’ traffic sank 73.7 percent.”

In the total world air transportation in 2020, the share of airlines in the Asia-Pacific region accounted for 38.6 percent, European countries - 38.6 percent, North America - 22.7 percent, the Middle East - 7.4 percent, Latin America - 5.7 percent and African carriers - 1.9 percent.
