Weekly review of major events in Azerbaijan's transport sector

BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 20

By Sadraddin Aghjayev - Trend:

Three large projects are planned to be implemented on the site of the Baku International Sea Trade Port (Baku port) in the medium and long term, Trend reports.

Due to the annual growth in the transshipment of wheeled vehicles, the port plans to implement the "TIR-park" project. Its advantages will be such services as parking of wheeled vehicles on the territory of the port, provision of necessary services such as recreation areas, customs clearance of goods, repairs, and a number of others in accordance with international practice.

Baku port said that will expand the infrastructure and services for container transportation. In this area, by modernizing the infrastructure for handling containerized cargo, the port intends to carry out these works as quickly as possible, as well as provide services for servicing refrigerated containers.

"In the long term, it is planned to build a grain terminal in the port. Thus, the port will be able to attract cargo from Central Asia and China by transit through Azerbaijan and increase its transit potential. The annual transshipment turnover, if the set goals are achieved, will be able to reach two to 3 million tons per year," the Baku port said.

"There also plans to expand cooperation with Dutch companies in the field of cargo transportation. In order to ensure a more efficient transshipment of goods from Europe to China, the port plans to build an intermodal terminal. The implementation of this project will expand cooperation with logistics companies operating in the Netherlands," the port added.

This week, Technical Director of the French Thales company in Azerbaijan, Mikhail Malinovsky, said that almost all Azerbaijani airports are equipped with Thales systems and solutions, adding that entertainment (audio and video) systems of the French company have been installed on a number of aircraft of Azerbaijan Airlines.

"Thales is also involved in the integration of technical solutions and software in the preparation of biometric passports and identity cards in Azerbaijan. In addition, the company cooperates with the Baku Metro. Thales, in particular, has implemented a project to modernize and introduce innovative automation and communication systems in the metro, ensuring train traffic safety, speed regulation, route and timetable management," the technical director noted.
