Cargo transit through Iran’s land roads surges

BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 5. Cargo transit through Iranian roads and railways increased by 22 percent in the first seven months of the current Iranian year (March 21 through October 22, 2023), compared to the same period last year, Deputy Minister of Roads and Urban Development Shahriar Afandizadeh said, Trend reports.

The deputy minister noted that about 7.92 million tons of cargo were transited via the roads and railways of the country within 7 months.

Afandizadeh added that approximately 2.39 million tons of oil and 5.53 million tons of non-oil products were transited for the reporting period. Oil products in transit increased by 34.1 percent, and non-oil products - by 17.5 percent compared to the same period last year.

He also stated that 7.12 million tons of cargo were transited via Iran’s roads and 796,000 tons via its railways.

During the 7 months of the current year, the total transit of goods through Iran (land, sea, air) amounted to 9.3 million tons, which is an increase of 15 percent compared to the same period last year.

Currently, there are 2,793 km of controlled-access highways, 45,170 km of highways, and freeways in operation in Iran.

The length of railway lines in Iran is currently 14,984 kilometers. At present, 978 locomotives, 29,305 freight wagons, and 2,153 passenger wagons are in operation on Iran's railways.
