BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 6. Some 23 million euros will be used for the uranium tailing ponds reclamation in Mayluu-Suu town in southern Kyrgyzstan, Trend reports citing the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Kyrgyzstan.

The money was allocated from the Environmental Remediation Account for Central Asia (ERA) of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

The ministry plans to carry out reclamation of 16 uranium tailing ponds, including the transfer of four tailing ponds to a safe place, as well as demolish dilapidated buildings, structure and fragments of the former uranium production, the conservation of mines and adits.

“The Ministry of Emergency Situations of Kyrgyzstan from 2017 to 2020 conducted an environmental impact assessment and developed a feasibility study for the uranium tailing ponds reclamation in Mayluu-Suu town with the financial support of the European Union,” the press-service of the department said.

According to the ministry, this is the third object in the country where ecological reclamation will be carried out.

In December last year, after the successful completion of projects in Shekaftar and Ming-Kush villages of Kyrgyzstan, the EBRD decided to allocate grant funds for the reclamation of facilities in Mailuu-Suu town.

The Environmental Remediation Account for Central Asia (ERA), established by EBRD in 2015, aims to assist Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan to clean up the most dangerous uranium legacy sites in these countries.
