BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan, April 18. Kyrgyzstan and the World Bank (WB) have agreed to develop a financial cooperation model within the framework of the construction of Kambarata-1 hydropower plant (HPP) in the country, Trend reports.
According to the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan, the agreement was reached following meetings between the Kyrgyzstan delegation led by the Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers, Akylbek Japarov, and the leadership of the World Bank Group (WBG) in Washington.
During the Spring Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group (WBG), Japarov held meetings with Asad Alam, the Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia for Equitable Growth at the WB. The main topic of discussion with Alam was the consideration of the project of the country's economic memorandum and the framework strategy of partnership.
During the meeting with Mamta Murthi, Vice President of the WB for Human Development, the parties discussed cooperation in the social sphere, including education, healthcare, and social protection.
Furthermore, a meeting took place between the Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet, Bakyt Torobaev, and Sameh Wahba, the WB's Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia, where the main topic of discussion was cooperation in the fields of agriculture and water management.
The parties emphasized the importance of discussing these issues in the context of climate change and natural disasters worldwide.
The Kambarata-1 HPP on the Naryn River is the largest hydroelectric project in the country. This HPP, which is expected to become one of Central Asia's largest hydropower ventures, will have a capacity of 1,860 MW and a reservoir volume of 5.4 billion cubic meters, with an annual electricity generation of 5.6 billion kWh. In November 2023, Kyrgyzstan signed a contract with the WB for $5 million in technical assistance to modify the Kambarata-1 HPP feasibility study.
