Uzbekistan, Tashkent, 5 October / Trend corr. T.Jukov / Valdis Zatlers, Latvian President, visits Uzbekistan by the invitation of Uzbekistan's President Islam Karimov on 5-7 October. The information was released by the Uzbek news-service on 4 October.
The sides will consider the issues regarding expansion and deepening of Uzbek-Latvian cooperation, as well as actual regional and international problems.
Ranges of bilateral documents, which are directed to deepen interaction of the two countries in different spheres, are expected to be signed as a result of the talks.
The Uzbek Foreign Ministry reported that the diplomatic relations between the both countries were set up in November 1992. Since November 1992, the Latvian Embassy has been functioning in Tashkent and since May 1995 -Uzbek Embassy in Riga.
The fundaments of the Uzbek-Latvian relations were laid during the Karimov's visit to Latvia in June 1995. In May 1996, Guntis Ulmanis, the then Latvian President, visited Uzbekistan. In April 2004, Karimov paid second state visit to Latvia.
The legal basis of bilateral relations consists of 37 agreements. The Uzbek State Statistic Committee reported that the trade turnover between Uzbekistan and Latvia increased by 79.2% and made up $142.6mln in the first half of 2008.
