Iran to join SWIFT in coming weeks

Tehran, Iran, November 10

By Mehdi Sepahvand -- Trend:

Iran is seeking to join the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT) in the coming weeks.

This news was released by Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders during a meeting with Iranian Economy Minister Ali Tayyebnia in Tehran, Mehr news agency reported November 10.

Speaking during the meeting, Tayyebnia pointed out that Iran and Belgium's economic relations date back 170 years.

He said he hoped Iran and Belgium will increase economic ties following the removal of sanctions on Iran.

Reynders, for his part, said this was his second visit to Iran in the past year, expressing his pleasure that new situations have prepared the way for the two countries to expand their mutual ties.

He noted that Iranian-Belgium trade relations were never completely severed, pointing out that he was currently leading over 20 business representatives to Iran in a bid to develop cooperation ventures.

He added that the oil industry, food and agricultural products, as well as energy, are the areas in which the two countries can best cooperate.

Belgium offers sophisticated new technologies, environmental assistance, and experience in waste management, which can provide the grounds for future cooperation, the Belgian official stated.

The sanctions are to be lifted based upon the signed JCPOA, which was reached between Iran and the 5+1 group, made up of the US, UK, France, Russia, China, and Germany, on July 14.

In 2005, before sanctions were tightened against Iran, Belgium was Iran's 28th largest trade partner. Belgium exported some $733 million in goods to Iran and imported $74 million goods from Iran.

During the first five months of the current Iranian year (March 21 to August 22), however, Iran's imports from Belgium were registered at $131.6 million, while exports hit $14.6 million.
