Iran’s unemployment rate hits 10.7%

Iran's unemployment rate during the autumn (Sept. 22-Dec. 22, 2015) stood at 10.7 percent, according to the latest report from the Iranian Statistical Center, released Jan. 19.

The unemployment rate among Iranians aged over 10 years in the mentioned three-month period was 0.2 percent more than the same period of time in the preceding year.

The figure also indicates a 0.2-percent fall compared to the preceding quarter's unemployment rate (June 21 - Sept. 21, 2015).

About 2.64 million of Iranians above 10 years old were jobless in the mentioned three-month period (ended on Dec. 22, 2015).

All Iranians aged over 10 years, who worked at least one hour a week, or temporary left their work during the survey week, were included as employed labor force in the report.

The country's labor force participation rate has decreased by 0.8 percent from 38.9 percent in last summer (June 21 - Sept. 21, 2015) to 38.1 percent in the autumn (Sept. 22-Dec. 22, 2015), according to the report.

The figure is also 0.8 percent more while compared to the autumn of 2014.

It should be noted that the participation rate is the percentage of working-age persons in an economy who, are employed or unemployed but looking for a job.

Unemployment among men and women was also around nine and 18.9 percent, respectively during the period.

The country's urban and rural unemployment rate in the mentioned period (Sept. 22-Dec. 22, 2015) stood at 11.7 and 8.1 percent, respectively.

About 17.6 percent of the country's labor force was employed in the agriculture sector, while 32.6 and 49.8 percent were employed in the industry and services sectors, respectively.

The Iranian Statistical Center said that over 3.88 million were employed in the agriculture sector during the period, while 7.17 million and 10.98 million people were employed in the industry and services sectors.

Iran's Markazi province registered the lowest unemployment rate with five percent in the autumn. Meanwhile, the highest unemployment rate was in the Kermanshah Province (18.6 percent).

Unemployment rate in Tehran province stood at 7.6 percent, 1.6 percent less compared to the summer.
The figure indicates a fall by 3.8 percent in comparison with the autumn of preceding year.
