Muammar Gaddafi had been shot in the head "in crossfire" between his supporters and National Transition Council fighters after his capture, Mahmoud Jibril, the de facto Libyan prime minister, told reporters on Thursday in Tripoli.
"He was alive up to last moment, until he arrived at hospital" in the town of Misrata, Al Jazeera quoted Jibril as saying.
Gaddafi died of serious gunshot injuries to the head and stomach, inflicted during his capture by NTC fighters, according to medical sources in Libya.
Mass demonstrations demanding the ouster of Gaddafi, who has been ruling the country for more than 40 years, started in Libya in mid-February and subsequently grew into armed confrontation between the government forces and the rebels.
