Some 18 million Iranians live in urban marginalized communities, an official with the country's interior ministry said. Bahman Meshkini, an adviser to the interior ministry has said that there are 18 million highly vulnerable slum dwellers in the country, ISNA news agency reported.
He has said that lack of development in rural and provincial areas has caused people to gather in slum areas of the developed provinces and cities like Esfahan.
An Iranian MP last year said that the country's slum population has increased 17 times since 30 years ago. Poor economic conditions make people to move near urban areas as they look for jobs and seek home in cheap places around large cities.
