Two wounded in Israeli airstrikes on Gaza

Israeli airstrikes in response to earlier mortar fire from the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip left two people wounded late Monday, witnesses said.

Witnesses said that Israeli F-16s circling over the coastal enclave fire missiles into a southern Gaza base belonging to al- Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of the Islamic Hamas movement. The target was west of the town of Khan Younis, dpa reported.

Two huge explosions were heard in the northern Gaza Strip after the jets fired missiles. Ambulances and rescue teams rushed to the targeted areas to evacuate any casualties.

Adham Abu Silmeya, spokesman for Gaza medical services in the Hamas Health Ministry, told reporters that two people were wounded in the southern Gaza Strip airstrike but declined to give details.

The Israeli airstrikes followed the lobbing of homemade mortars by Gaza militants toward southern Israel. According to Israeli Radio, the projectiles caused no damage or injuries.

In a leaflet emailed to reporters, the Popular Resistance Committees, a group loyal to Hamas, claimed responsibility for firing 10 mortar shells at southern Israel in "response to the Zionist crimes against our people."

Two days ago, an Israeli army spokesman said that Israeli air forces targeted five militants who were trying to launch rockets from Gaza toward Israel. Members of militant Islamist groups, all five were killed.
