As of today in economic terms, the EU needs Turkey more than Turkey needs the EU, Turkey's Minister for EU Affairs Egemen Bagis said, Doğan agency reported.
Bagis noted that Turkey's accession to the EU would contribute to the rapid resolution of the economic crisis in the EU states.
"Turkey has become a progressive country with a steadily growing economy. Turkey's accession to the EU would be much more important for the EU than for Turkey at the moment," he said.
Relations and cooperation between Turkey and the EU began with the signing of an agreement in 1964 in Ankara. The EU announced that the Copenhagen criteria set in 2002 is the key to Turkey's EU membership. Turkey carried out large judicial and political reforms under the criteria. Since 2005, the sides began formal discussions regarding Turkey's entry the EU.
