Uzbekistan, UK discuss strengthening trade and economic relations

Uzbekistan and Great Britain have reached agreements on strengthening trade and economic relations at the 20th meeting of the Uzbek-British Trade and Industry Council (UBTIC) held in London.

The anniversary meeting of the Uzbek-British Council was chaired by the deputy of the House of Commons of the British Parliament and co-chair of UBTIC from the British side Peter Lilley, the Ministry for Foreign Economic Relations, Investments and Trade of Uzbekistan told Trend on Nov.27.

The Uzbek delegation which included representatives from 20 national companies was headed by Uzbek Minister for Foreign Economic Relations, Investments and Trade and co-chair of the council from the Uzbek side Elyor Ganiev.

According to the ministry's representative, meeting participants discussed projects in the areas of science and education. In particular, they considered the issues of development of a Tashkent Centre for High Technologies with the support of experts from Cambridge University.

In addition, meeting discussions covered the opportunities of cooperation with London Metropolitan University, Magna Carta College Oxford and the TVET UK organization which is a leader in the sphere of professional and technical training.

During the visit to the UK, the Uzbek Minister for Foreign Economic Relations, Investments and Trade held a number of meetings aimed at development of bilateral trade and economic relations. In particular, he met with the First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Great Britain, Baroness Uorsi, the Lord Mayor of the City of London, Fiona Woolf, representatives of the British Ministry of Investments and Trade and British Chamber of Commerce, as well as with the leadership of several British companies.

The Uzbek-British Trade and Industry Council was founded within an intergovernmental agreement in 1994. This council is a forum used by the governments of the two countries in order to strengthen bilateral trade and economic relations and contribute to the British companies in the implementation of their activity in Uzbekistan.

The meetings of the council are held in Tashkent and London every year.
