Azerbaijan develops rules for national domain registration

Azerbaijani Communications and Information Technologies Ministry has submitted rules on usage and registration of the national domain ".az" to Azerbaijani Ministry of Justice, the ministry told Trend on Jan. 9.

The ministry said that the rules include requirements for registration and re- registration of domains, their selection criteria, keeping the registry of domain names etc.

Rules also include management of the process of online registration of the national domain.

The document takes into account recommendations of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). The question regarding the issuance of domains will be regulated based on ICANN recommendations.

"Accordingly, registration of domains not complying with the requirements of these recommendations and new rules will be impossible," the ministry said.

On Jan. 10 the document will be submitted for the public discussion on the Electronic Azerbaijan (e-gov.az) portal.

Currently, 20,830 internet resources are registered on the national domain zone ".az". Out of the total number of registered sites some 19,484 ones account for the internet resources, registered on the first level domain. The most popular second-level domain is ".com.az". Some 797 websites were registered on this level. The third popular domain is the ".edu.az" with 183 web sites.

National domain zone ".az" officially started operating on August 25, 1993.

The registration of ".az" domain zone costs 20 manats and annual technical maintenance also costs 20 manats.

The official exchange rate on Jan. 9 is 0.7844 AZN/USD.
