By Maksim Tsurkov - Trend:

Azerbaijani female gymnast Marina Durunda won a silver medal in rhythmic gymnastics in the exercises with a ribbon within the framework of the first European Games in Baku.

Afterwards, Durunda told reporters she dedicates her victory to whole Azerbaijan.

"I'm very happy because I could bring joy to all of Azerbaijan with my performance and victory," she said. "For me it was very important to perform to the national Azerbaijani music at the highest level, and I think everything has worked out fine. I was very motivated and glad I could perform accordingly."

Durunda said that she was a bit worried, because it is very difficult to perform at home.

"Nevertheless, I'm glad everything has worked out fine," said Durunda. "I had thirst for win after unsuccessful attempts. The last performance with the ribbon was the most important one, since I was the one performing last. I was trying to show everything I was capable of, but not everything depends on us in this kind of sport."

Durunda went on to add that she did not realize at once that she won a medal.

"I tried to think only of the performance, and when I finished, I was happy, because I did everything I could," said the gymnast. "Later, when I was sitting and waiting for grades with my coach, I realized I won a medal. I think that's what I was aspiring to."

"I dedicate my victory to all Azerbaijan," she said. "Thank you very much for your support! It was very nice to perform in my own country at the competitions of such greatest level. I would like to thank Azerbaijan Gymnastics Federation, head coach Mariana Vasileva, the rest of the coaches who were preparing me. Thank you all!"

The European Games that kicked off June 12, will last till June 28. There is a total of 20 sports at Baku 2015: 16 Olympic sports and four non-Olympic sports.
More than 6,000 athletes from across Europe came to Baku to represent their nations over 17 days of competition. Baku was awarded the games by the European Olympic Committees (EOC) in December 2012.
