Member of Germany's Bundestag (Parliament) Peter Gauweiler said that Armenia's Armed Forces should be withdrawn from Azerbaijani territories.
The known resolutions on Armenian-Azerbaijan conflict adopted by the UN Security Council leave no room for doubt, the member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the Bundestag and the member of the Christian Democratic Union / Christian Social Union (CDU / CSU) fraction, Peter Gauweiler commenting on Azerbaijan-European Community's question about the Armenian-Azerbaijan Nagorno Karabakh conflict.
"Nagorno Karabkh is an integral part of Azerbaijan. Its occupation is a violation of international law. Therefore, Armenian troops should be withdrawn from the occupied territories. This is the only solution to the conflict," Gauweiler said.
According to him, it is necessary to give the IDPs an opportunity to return their homeland safely. "Therefore, the Armenian troops should immediately be withdrawn from the occupied territories of Azerbaijan," the MP stressed.
He noted that, Azerbaijan and Germany closely cooperate in various spheres.
"Azerbaijan is an important partner in Germany's energy security. Therefore, the most important issue is that the conflicting parties should come back to the negotiating table. That's why the multilateral discussion of this issue is one of the significant moments. Germany will make every effort for supporting the process of peaceful solution to the conflict," Gauweiler added.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 per cent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.
Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France and the U.S. are currently holding peace negotiations.
Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
