Baku, Azerbaijan, Feb. 2

By Leman Zeynalova – Trend:

OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs will visit Azerbaijan on Feb. 6, Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry’s Spokesman Hikmat Hajiyev told Trend Feb. 2.

The meetings with Azerbaijani officials will be held on Feb. 7, said Hajiyev.

Intensive and constructive discussions on the settlement of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict will continue during the visit, noted the spokesman.

The latest meeting of OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs, Andrew Schofer (USA), Stefan Visconti (France) and Igor Popov (Russia), and Ambassador Andrzej Kasprzyk, Personal Representative of the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office with Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov was held in Poland’s Krakow city on Jan. 18.

Following the Baku visit, the OSCE MG co-chairs will visit Yerevan.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
