Interior minister: Turkish police not involved in protester’s death

Protester Ahmed Atakan died in Hatay province after he fell from a roof. The Turkish police were not involved in his death, Turkish Interior Minister Muammer Guler said today, TRT Haber TV channel reported.

"The medical report showed that Atakan died after he fell from the roof of a building," the minister added. "The police are not involved in his death."

Those dissatisfied with the policy of the ruling Justice and Development Party were involved in the protest actions in Antakya near the Turkish province of Hatay on Sept. 9. The security forces and protesters clashed and Ahmed Atakan was killed following the clashes.

The protest actions have lasted for nearly three weeks in Turkey since late May. According to the authorities, they were anti-government.

Around 4,000 people were injured, five were killed as a result of the riots in Turkey and 4,900 people were detained by police.
