Azerbaijani Supreme Court Partially Approves Appeal by Opposition Leader

Azerbaijan, Baku, 15 February / Trend corr. I.Alizadeh / The Supreme Court of Azerbaijan has partially approved the appeal concerning the issue of a passport to Ali Karimli, the chairman of Popular Front Party. Elchin Gambarov, Karimli's lawyer, stated to Trend that the Supreme Court made the judgment to cancel the decision by the Appeal Court.

"Supreme Court made a decision to cancel the case made against Karimli in the citizenship order. Under the decision, we must appeal to the Nasimi District Court in order to cancel the case against Karimli," the lawyer stated.

Gambarov added that they were not satisfied with the decision of the Supreme Court. "We will appeal to the European Court of Human rights," he said.

In 2006, Karimli appealed to the Passport Registration Department of Internal Ministry to receive the new passport. However, the Department rejected his request due to the case being brought against him in 1994 for illegal gun-keeping.

The lawyer said that case was brought against Karimli 12 years later whilst under the Criminal legislation it must be considered within five years. Karimli asked Nasimi District Court to cancel the case. The Court did not approve the appeal.

Hasan Karimli, the deputy chairman of the party, said that the authorities are attempting to prevent political activity of Karimli on the threshold of the presidential elections.
