BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 14. Coal demand in the Caspian region, according to the Stated Policies Scenario (STEPS), is expected to stay relatively flat by 2030, International Energy Agency (IEA) forecasts, Trend reports via the World Energy Outlook from the IEA.

At the same time, according to the Announced Pledges Scenario (APS), the coal demand in the countries of the Caspian region is projected to drop by only 10 percent through to 2030.

The IEA forecasts coal demand in overall Eurasia to decrease from 222 million tons of coal equivalent (Mtce) in 2021 to 172 Mtce by 2030, and 160 Mtce by 2050, according to the STEPS. The APS, for instance, envisages a large decline to 162 Mtce by 2030, and 121 Mtce by 2050.

As the report noted, the total global coal demand, as of the STEPS, is expected to decrease by around 10 percent in 2021-2030, with an almost 50-percent decline in advanced economies and a slight increase in emerging market and developing economies.

“In the APS, global coal demand falls by 20 percent to 2030 and by 70 percent to 2050. Demand in advanced economies declines by 65 percent to 2030 as coal use in the power and industry sectors falls rapidly,” the report said.
