Iran boosts volume of caviar exports

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Dec. 20

By Elnur Baghishov – Trend:

Iran's caviar exports have increased by 60 percent in terms of volume since the beginning of current Iranian year (March 20, 2020), compared to the same period last Iranian year, Executive Officer of CITES Management Authority for Acipenseriformes in Iran for sturgeon issues, Mehdi Shakuri said, Trend reports citing Iran Fisheries Organization.

Shakuri noted that 2.3 tons of caviar was exported from Iran to European and Asian countries during the reporting period.

The official added that Iran's caviar exports will reach 2.8 tons by the end of the current Iranian year (March 21, 2021), and there will be an increase of 100 percent compared to last Iranian year.

"Furthermore, more than 300 tons of sturgeon meat were exported within this period," he said.

The official emphasized that if the export process continues, Iran's caviar exports are to be increased from 2 to 4 tons in the next Iranian year.

According to Shakuri, adherence to the rules of caviar exporting countries, protection of caviar quality, full application of CITES rules in sturgeon farms guarantee Iran's caviar exports.

In 2010, the Caspian littoral states banned commercial fishing for sturgeon in order to protect the sea's natural resources. In this regard, the Caspian littoral countries are grown sturgeon by creating fish farms.
