BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 5. Iran's sprat fishing from the Caspian Sea decreased by 55 tons, over the last Iranian year (March 21, 2021 through March 20, 2022), compared to the preceding Iranian year (March 20, 2020 through March 20, 2021), an official of Iran Fisheries Organization Mostafa Behishtian said, Trend reports citing the organization’s website.

The official noted that in total, Iran caught 20,053 tons of sprat from the Caspian Sea, while, in the preceding Iranian year, the figure stood at 20,138 tons.

“In Iran, 74 ships are engaged in sprat fishing. Some 30 of them are in Gilan Province, and 44 - in Mazandaran Province,” he added.

According to Behishtian, sprat is nutritionally more important than bony fish. However, because sprat is not important in Iran’s food basket, more than 90 percent of the caught sprat is used for the production of fish powder.

The official also pointed out that due to the protection of the sprat resources in the Caspian Sea, it is not caught from the sea in spring.
