In January-April, the SOCAR reduced gas flaring in torches by 140,000 cubic meters per day, SOCAR Vice President for Ecology Mukhtar Babayev said.
"The reduced volume of the gas was utilized by consumers," Babayev said at a conference on managing gases that cause greenhouse effect amid global warming. The conference is held upon initiative of the SOCAR together with Global Gas Flaring Reductions (GGFR) which became SOCAR partners in 2008.
"The gas meant for flaring in torches is utilized via various technologies applied by the SOCAR. The gas is pumped to meet consumers' demand and to use in production process," he said.
The conference will be attended by 120 delegates including representatives of SOCAR, National Academy of Sciences, Azerenerji joint stock company, Azerbaijan Airlines, Azerbaijan State Caspian Shipping Company and public organizations.
The SOCAR emitted about 331 million cubic meters of gas to atmosphere in 2008, 120 million of which account for shallow part of Gunashli field. About 206 million cubic meters of gas was emitted from Oil Rocks.
