Around 34 new power plants were put into operation in Turkey in the first quarter of 2013, the newspaper "The Lira" reported today.

According to the report, as a result, the power plants' installed capacity increased from 57,500 megawatts (as of 2012) to 57,700 megawatts in Turkey in the first quarter of 2013.

It is reported that some 24 of the power plants put into operation are hydroelectric, five - gas power plants, two - wind power plants and three - thermal power plants. Moreover, some 27 of 34 commissioned plants were built by private companies.

Earlier, the Turkish state-owned electricity transmission company reported that the generation of electricity decreased by 5.2 percent amounting to 58.8 billion kilowatt / hour in Turkey in the first quarter of 2013 compared to the same period of 2012.

The consumption of electricity fell by 2.4 percent amounting to 60.5 billion kilowatt / hour in January-March compared to the same period in 2012.

Electricity exports from Turkey decreased by 84 percent to 185 million kilowatt / hour in the first quarter of 2013.
