By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:
Georgia purchased electricity in the amount of $43.6 million in the first 10 months of 2020, Trend reports with reference to the report of the Georgian National Statistics Office (Geostat).
According to the Geostat, the import of electricity to the country is growing from year to year.
Below is the cost of electricity imported by Georgia by year:
2015 - $43.9 million
2016 - $21.9 million
2017 - $66.8 million
2018 - $75.8 million
2019 - $78.3 million
2020 (10 months) - $43.6 million.
This year the Georgian economy consumed less electricity in 10 months. The reason for this is the decline in economic activity, which covers almost all industries, from manufacturing to tourism. Due to lower demand, the country consumes less electricity.
In fact, electricity consumption has declined at the same rate as the country's economy.
According to official statistics, the country consumed 9.89 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity this year, which is 638 million kilowatt-hours less than in the same period in 2019.
Electricity consumption in Georgia by years:
2015 - 10381.8 million / kWh
2016 - 11026.6 million / kWh
2017 - 11875.3 million / kWh
2018 - 12584.5 million / kWh
2019 - 12767.6 million / kWh
2020 (10 months) - 9891.0 million / kWh
As for the export of electricity, it amounted to 153.7 million / kWh, which is 37 percent less than a year earlier.
Presumably due to a decrease in local consumption, imports also decreased and amounted to 1.05 billion kilowatt-hours. In 2019, this indicator exceeded 1.2 billion kilowatt-hours. Electricity consumption is highly likely not to return to 2019 levels until 2021.
