Azerbaijan to restore hydroelectric power plants in Nagorno-Karabakh region

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Dec. 16

By Fidan Babayeva - Trend:

After assessing the technical condition of the hydroelectric power plants, the restoration work of the hydroelectric power stations will be carried out in Azerbaijan’s Nagorno-Karabakh, Jahid Mikayilov, spokesman for the Azerbaijani Energy Ministry, told Trend.

“Some 25 percent of Azerbaijan’s local water reserves, that is, about 2.56 billion cubic meters of water per year, are formed in the Nagorno-Karabakh region,” Mikayilov added. “Nagorno-Karabakh region and adjacent districts have great potential for using various energy sources.”

"The Nagorno-Karabakh region is one of the main regions of Azerbaijan, where which local water reserves are formed,” spokesman said. “Some 25 percent of Azerbaijan’s local water reserves are formed here, that is, about 2.56 billion cubic meters of water per year. The main rivers of the region, such as Tartar, Bazarchay (Bargushadchay), Khakari and other small rivers have great hydropower potential. Some of them have been used since Soviet period, but the main ones can be used in the future."

“There were three big hydroelectric power plants in the occupied Azerbaijani territories, one of which was the Tartar hydroelectric power station, built in 1976 in Tartar district on the Tartar river together with the Sarsang reservoir,” spokesman said.

"The station consists of two hydraulic units with a capacity of 25 MW each,” the spokesman said. “Sarsang is one of the highest dams in the country in terms of the height of the dam (125 meters). The Sarsang reservoir provided about 125,000 hectares of land in six districts (Tartar, Aghdam, Barda, Goranboy, Yevlakh and Aghjabadi) with water. The station generated 81.9 million kWh of electricity in 1990. The station has been under occupation since 1993."

Concerning the topic of the restoration of the stations, Mikayilov said that given that the complex is not serviced, outdated equipment is used, first of all, it will be necessary to assess its technical condition and then to carry out restoration work.
