Weekly review of highlights in Azerbaijan's oil and gas sector

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Feb.15

By Fidan Babayeva - Trend:

Italy has experienced a ‘revolution’ in the gas market with the contribution of the Trans Adriatic Pipeline last week, Trend reports on Feb.15 citing Italian media.

According to the media, Italy for the first time exported 24 million and 12 million cubic meters of gas to France on Jan.23-24 and Jan.30-31, 2021 respectively. Around 4 million cubic meters of gas went to Switzerland.

Besides, last week it was reported that Azerbaijan exported 11.1 billion cubic meters of gas via the Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum (BTE) pipeline in 2020, which is 20 percent more compared to 2019.

According to the State Statistical Committee, 4.7 billion cubic meters of the total volume of Azerbaijani gas exported to Turkey in 2020 were transported through Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP), and which is 1.7 times more compared to the previous year.

Norway’s Equinor company, which holds a 7.27 percent share in the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli (ACG) block of oil and gas fields in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea, reported last week about the production of 33,500 barrels of oil equivalent per day (BOE/D) of liquids in the fourth quarter of 2020, as compared to 32,900 BOE/D in the third quarter of the same year.

Furthermore, last week the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) forecasted that petroleum and other liquids production in Azerbaijan will stand at 730,000 barrels per day in 2021.

"The volume of gas sales from Azerbaijan abroad in 2020 amounted to 13.5 billion cubic meters, which is 590 million cubic meters less than the forecast. At the same time, the volume increased by 1.8 billion cubic meters, that is, by 15.6 percent compared to 2019," added the EIA.

Last week it was also reported that Azerbaijan supplied 1.2 billion cubic meters of gas via the Gazimammad-Gazakh gas pipeline to Georgia in 2020. The export of Azerbaijani gas through the Gazimammad-Gazakh pipeline decreased by 3.8 percent compared to 2019.

“By February 9, 2021, 4,691 tankers with oil from the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli (ACG) block of fields have been loaded from the terminal in Turkish Ceyhan. As many as 32 tankers with ACG oil (around 23.2 million barrels of oil) were shipped from the Ceyhan oil terminal since the beginning of 2021 up to February 9, 2021,” Turkish BOTAS International Limited (BIL) said.
