Kazakhstan plans to open tender for promising energy projects

BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 1

Tenders for promising projects in the electric power industry with a total installed capacity of 1,000 MW are planned to be held in Kazakhstan in December 2021, Minister of Energy of Kazakhstan Nurlan Nogayev said, Trend reports with reference to the ministry.

Nogayev made the remark at a meeting of the CIS Electric Power Council in the format of a video conference.

The minister briefed the meeting participants on the latest changes in the electricity sector of Kazakhstan.

He also spoke about the amendments to the law ‘On Electricity’, adopted in Kazakhstan in December 2020.

The amendments provide for an auction mechanism for the construction of generating units with a flexible generation mode.

Nogayev also announced Kazakhstan's plans to increase the capacity of renewable energy sources from the current 1,800 to 2,100 MW by the end of 2021.

“In 2020, the electricity generation volume in Kazakhstan amounted to 108 billion kilowatt-hours. It is expected that by the end of 2021 this figure will be at least 109 billion kilowatt-hours,” the minister added.
